The BMW i4 xDrive40, a regular all-wheel drive electric sedan, underwent a week-long evaluation that highlighted its similarities to the gasoline-powered BMW 430i Gran Coupe, although it operates on a different powertrain architecture. The i4 is designed to appeal to mainstream BMW customers by looking familiar, as it resembles both gasoline and battery electric vehicle versions of the same model. Its instantaneous throttle response, smooth ride quality, and weight management were noted as significant benefits over its combustion counterpart. With a curb weight of 5,000 lbs (2,200 kg), the i4 still managed to deliver an engaging driving experience, addressing some of the challenges common to electric vehicles. The i4 packs a punch with 395 horsepower (295 kW) and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque, matched with an MSRP of $62,300, making it a performance-oriented choice in the electric sedan market. Charged by an 84 kWh battery pack, utilizing 81 kWh of usable capacity, the i4 is expected to offer a range of 287 miles (462 km) on 18-inch wheels. However, with the test vehicle fitted with 19-inch wheels, the range drops slightly to 269 miles (432 km). The regenerative braking feature, easily adjustable for the driver, adds to the vehicle's versatility and efficiency. Charging capabilities were evaluated with the test unit managing to charge 90 percent in just 40 minutes at a 150 kW Electrify America charger, achieving a peak of 139 kW. BMW advertises a quicker charging time of 30 minutes from 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) with a more powerful charger.
