Bhopal Implements Measures to Combat Stray Cattle on Highways
- PWD directs toll plaza contractors to remove stray cattle from highways in Bhopal.
- Patrolling teams to be constituted to ensure road safety and clear the way from cattle.
- Hydraulic vehicles to be deployed for transporting injured or dead cattle on the road.
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – In a bid to reduce fatal road accidents caused by stray cattle, the Public Works Department (PWD) has mandated toll plaza contractors to establish patrolling teams dedicated to clearing highways of these animals. A senior PWD official confirmed that these teams will actively patrol the roads to chase away stray cattle, ensuring safer travel for motorists. As part of the initiative, contractors are also required to provide hydraulic vehicles for the removal and transportation of injured or deceased cattle. Once collected, the animals will be handed over to the Animal Husbandry Department for further care. This directive has been communicated to various officials, including the managing director of the Madhya Pradesh Development Corporation and the Chief Engineer at Nirman Bhawan in Bhopal. The PWD has outlined a special campaign to run until September 30, with weekly reports to be submitted to the government every Monday. The veterinary department has also been alerted to assist in this effort. The issue of stray cattle has become increasingly problematic, particularly during the monsoon season when many owners release their animals, leading to significant traffic disruptions and accidents. Recent data from the police department indicates that approximately 15,984 incidents involving cattle have been reported. In response, the state government initiated a 15-day campaign on August 16 to address the stray cattle crisis, forming a committee led by the Additional Chief Secretary to oversee the efforts.
