- The court handed down the sentence due to the severity of the attack
A father-of-three, Luke Moran, has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a violent incident involving a police van in Southport. The 31-year-old roofer was one of five individuals sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court for their participation in the unrest that erupted following a tragic stabbing attack in the area, which resulted in the deaths of three young girls and injuries to ten others, including eight children. The court heard that Moran's actions left a police officer fearing for their life as he attempted to smash the van's window. The Crown Prosecution Service reported that over 497 individuals have been charged in connection with the weeks-long disturbances that spread across England and Northern Ireland. During the court proceedings, body cam footage was presented, showing Moran's aggressive behavior towards the police van. The driver of the van managed to escape through the rear, shielded by fellow officers. In addition to Moran, Daniel Carrigan, 41, from Liverpool, received a sentence of two years and eight months for throwing objects at the police van. A 20-year-old from Banks, Southport, who threw concrete during the riots, was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders' institution, with half of his term to be served in prison and the other half in the community. The unrest also involved other individuals, including a former soldier, who faced sentencing for their actions during the violent protests, highlighting the widespread nature of the disturbances that have affected multiple communities.
