In a significant development, prosecutors in Santa Clara County have identified Gerardo Aguilar, also known as Gerardo Mulato, as the suspect in the 1991 murder of 14-year-old Raymond Ojeda. The announcement was made by District Attorney Jeff Rosen, who emphasized the importance of justice for victims and their families, stating, "It's never too late to identify a killer." The tragic incident occurred on September 28, 1991, when Aguilar, then just 15 years old, fatally shot Ojeda during a confrontation in East San Jose's Foxdale Loop area. Following the shooting, a warrant was issued for Aguilar's arrest, but he evaded capture for years. The Cold Case unit's investigation led them to a man living in Ohio under the alias Gerardo Mulato, prompting further scrutiny. DNA analysis confirmed that Mulato and Aguilar were indeed the same person. Reports indicate that Aguilar had been residing in Ohio for several years before his death in a 2007 shootout with FBI agents. The confrontation arose when he mistakenly believed the agents were car thieves attempting to install a tracking device on his vehicle, leading to a fatal exchange of gunfire. Since its inception in 2018, the Cold Case Unit has made significant strides, solving 20 homicides and 15 sexual assault cases, showcasing the ongoing commitment to delivering justice for victims long after the crimes have occurred.
