In Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, a record 34 Israeli companies showcased their products at IDEX, the largest defense expo in the Middle East, which took place after fifteen months of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The expo, occurring amid a fragile ceasefire, marked a significant change in the atmosphere compared to previous exhibitions, reflecting an evolving relationship between Israel and the UAE. During the five-day event, Israeli executives described a notably warm reception, highlighting how Emirati and Saudi representatives engaged positively, often shaking hands and initiating conversations. Boaz Levy, CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries, voiced that they felt welcomed and at home, indicating a shift in perceptions toward Israeli firms since the previous Dubai Airshow in November 2023, where attendance was minimal. At that time, only three Israeli companies participated, and the atmosphere was starkly different, with a largely empty pavilion and minimal media interaction. The UAE-Israel relationship, formalized through the Abraham Accords in 2020, has enabled continued trade and exchanges, despite official UAE government statements condemning Israeli military actions in Gaza. As of October 2023, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remained dire, with thousands of casualties and displacement noted. Despite the ongoing conflict, Israeli defense exports have shown resilience, with air defense systems being a prominent category. India remains the top buyer of Israeli arms, followed by several European and Southeast Asian countries. Executives at IDEX expressed optimism, stating that the event could enhance relations further. Products showcased included advanced command, control, and surveillance systems that were already operational in the UAE, demonstrating a commitment to collaboration in defense technologies. The enthusiastic reception was attributed to ongoing efforts to solidify business ties, showcasing a willingness to engage despite past adversities and current geopolitical tensions.
