Story

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has levied a fine of Rs 1 crore on contractor Strabag following the emergence of potholes on the approach road to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Atal Setu. This information came to light through an RTI application filed by activist Anil Galgali, revealing concerns about the road's condition shortly after its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, 2024. An inspection conducted in June 2024 uncovered small cracks in the temporary road connecting Ramp 5 of the bridge, which is not part of the main structure. MMRDA promptly repaired these cracks and issued a show cause notice to Strabag, indicating dissatisfaction with the quality of work despite the project being completed on January 5, 2024. MMRDA Chief Engineer D M Chamalwar highlighted the contractor's failure to maintain the required standards. In response to the findings, MMRDA's consultant K R Shivanand instructed Strabag to rectify the issues within 48 hours and submit a detailed action plan to improve the pavement quality. Activist Galgali emphasized the need for regular monitoring of projects by MMRDA every six months to prevent quality lapses. While acknowledging the fine as a necessary measure, Galgali advocated for the blacklisting of Strabag to prevent future infractions, underscoring the importance of accountability in public infrastructure projects.
