Taiwan is working towards establishing itself as a leader in artificial intelligence through a new initiative launched on January 3, 2025. President Lai Ching-te unveiled this plan during an event organized by the National Science and Technology Council, aimed at transforming southern Taiwan into a hub similar to Silicon Valley, particularly focusing on Shalun Green Energy Science City in Tainan City. The proposed initiative will extend the development efforts to numerous surrounding cities like Chiayi, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, ensuring more comprehensive coverage of AI and system integration research and development. This ambitious project is part of a broader governmental strategy involving six flagship regional projects, which overall will invest more than NT$1 trillion (approximately US$30.4 billion) into advancing AI capabilities, enhancing transportation infrastructure, and improving living standards across Taiwan. Lai emphasized that the importance of AI technology will not only bolster Taiwan's technological landscape but will also contribute significantly to the country’s resilience, later influencing its socioeconomic structure positively. Moreover, the initiative aims to integrate Taiwan’s robust semiconductor industry with its academic and private sector achievements. By cooperating with other democratic nations, Taiwan is looking to strengthen its position in global supply chains, ensuring economic stability against external pressures. Lai noted the importance of biotechnology and healthcare improvements in enhancing public welfare as part of achieving a balanced and healthy society, which reflects Taiwan’s commitment to building a future ready for the global challenges. The president highlighted that while the immediate focus is on AI development, the overarching goals include fostering regional economic growth and expanding national security through partnerships with other democracies.
