- Insights on American youth engagement in politics.
An online survey conducted by The Harris Poll for UNICEF USA in May 2024 reveals significant insights into the political attitudes of young people aged 14 to 22 as the 2024 presidential election approaches. The survey found that a striking 81 percent of respondents feel that those in power are indifferent to their opinions. This sentiment highlights a growing disconnect between youth and political leaders, prompting discussions among members of the UNICEF USA National Youth Council. Sophia and Aryan, two council members, expressed their reflections on the survey's findings, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in political discourse. They noted that while skepticism exists, particularly regarding pressing issues like climate change and economic instability, there remains a notable sense of hope among young people. Aryan pointed out that 28 percent of respondents believe society is currently thriving, while 38 percent are optimistic about future societal progress, indicating a 10 percent increase in hopefulness. The council members advocate for active participation in the political process, stressing the importance of voting and civic engagement. Aryan encouraged young people to create voting plans, ideally with friends, and to engage in discussions with those holding differing viewpoints. They also highlighted the significance of local elections, urging peers to recognize the impact of their votes beyond just presidential races. Overall, the survey underscores a desire among young people to influence the political landscape and effect positive change for future generations.
