Refugee Welcome Center in Romania

On August 7, a new facility aimed at supporting children and families fleeing the war in Ukraine was inaugurated at the Border Crossing Point (BCP) in Siret, Suceava County, Romania. This space is designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment for those forced to leave their homes due to the ongoing conflict. Equipped with essential resources, the facility addresses the immediate needs of mothers and their children, ensuring they receive basic assistance upon arrival. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), approximately 70% of the refugees crossing into Romania are women and children. In a related development, the European Union has extended temporary protection for around 4.2 million Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2026. This extension follows the activation of the temporary protection directive on March 4, 2022, which was the first of its kind within the EU. This directive allows Ukrainian beneficiaries to live, work, and access assistance in EU member states, providing a crucial safety net for those affected by the war.
