Former U.S. Representative Debbie Mucarsel-Powell will face incumbent Senator Rick Scott in the upcoming November election after both candidates secured their party nominations in Florida's primary elections held on August 20. Mucarsel-Powell, who previously served one term in the House before being ousted in 2020, received over 677,000 votes, accounting for 69 percent of the Democratic ballot. The Associated Press called her race shortly after polls closed, confirming her position on the November 5 ballot. Senator Scott, a Republican and U.S. Navy veteran, garnered more than 1 million votes, representing 84.5 percent of the Republican primary tally. He has been campaigning against Mucarsel-Powell, labeling her as a "socialist" challenger. Scott's campaign focuses on his Rescue America Plan, which includes proposals on education, government debt reform, and tax cuts. The political landscape in Florida shows a significant Republican advantage, with registered Republicans outnumbering Democrats 5.3 million to 4.3 million. However, the presence of 3.5 million independent voters in Florida could play a crucial role in the election, leading Democrats to believe that Scott may be vulnerable. In other primary races, former Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos won his primary in Congressional District 8, while Whitney Fox emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Clearwater-area Congressional District 13, setting the stage for competitive general elections in both districts.
