Katie Pumphrey, a renowned open water swimmer, recently embarked on a new swimathon just a month after her remarkable 24-mile swim from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to Baltimore's Inner Harbor. This latest endeavor took place in the picturesque Catalina Channel, where Pumphrey recalled the stunning beauty of her previous swim in 2018, highlighting the enchanting bioluminescence, vibrant marine life, and breathtaking sunrises that accompanied her journey. For this swim, Pumphrey donned a specially designed swimsuit adorned with symbols of her hometown, including the Maryland blue crab and the black-eyed Susan, crafted by Baltimore illustrator Sarah Bolton. Pumphrey's dedication to open water swimming is evident, as she became the 73rd woman in history to complete The Three Swims, known as the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, in 2021. Her historic swim from the Bay Bridge to the Inner Harbor on June 25 marked a significant achievement, taking her 13 hours and 54 minutes to complete. Pumphrey began her swim at Sandy Point State Park at 3:19 a.m. and was greeted by enthusiastic supporters upon her finish around 5 p.m. She described the swim as a "love letter to Baltimore," celebrating the harbor's swimmable status and her passion for swimming. To support Pumphrey's upcoming 2024 swim season and future projects, donations can be made through her GoFundMe page, as she continues to inspire others with her remarkable feats in open water swimming.
