Gable Steveson, an Olympic gold medalist, is set to return to the University of Minnesota wrestling team after more than two years since his last collegiate competition. The announcement was made on Tuesday, with Steveson expected to make his season debut on November 24 against Campbell University. He previously competed in the 2021-22 season where he concluded with an impressive 52-match winning streak. His return is facilitated by NCAA waivers, which he qualified for due to an Olympic redshirt and an additional year granted in 2020 because of COVID-19. Throughout his career at Minnesota, Steveson achieved remarkable success, winning two NCAA championships and three Big Ten titles, maintaining an undefeated record over his last three seasons. In addition to his accolades, Steveson made headlines during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, becoming the youngest freestyle wrestler to win gold in the super heavyweight division. Although he briefly joined World Wrestling Entertainment, his decision to return to college wrestling demonstrates his commitment to the sport and the University of Minnesota. Gable Steveson expressed his gratitude towards the university and his desire to give back by resuming his competitive wrestling career, emphasizing his goal to become a champion once more.
