Brentford Signs Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool
- Brentford completes the signing of Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool.
- Van den Berg had made four appearances for Liverpool but has not played for the club since February 2020.
- This transfer marks a new chapter in Van den Berg's football career.
Liverpool Football Club is set to earn over £50 million from recent transfer dealings with Brentford, following the sale of defender Sepp van den Berg for an initial £20 million, with potential add-ons bringing the total to £25 million. This follows the earlier transfer of Fabio Carvalho to Brentford for £27.5 million. Van den Berg has signed a five-year contract with the Bees and includes a 17.5 percent sell-on clause, mirroring the arrangement for Carvalho. The 22-year-old Dutch defender, who has not featured for Liverpool since February 2020, has spent the last four seasons on loan, including two stints in the Championship and two in Germany. His transfer marks another profitable move for Liverpool, who also sold midfielder Bobby Clark to Salzburg for £10 million. New director of football Richard Hughes has successfully negotiated these deals, aligning with Liverpool's strategy to offload fringe players. Despite these lucrative sales, Liverpool remains the only Premier League club yet to make a summer signing, although they are reportedly close to acquiring goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Brentford's upcoming match against Liverpool at Anfield will see Carvalho return to his former club, while Van den Berg is eligible to play following the completion of his transfer. Brentford manager Thomas Frank expressed enthusiasm about signing Van den Berg, highlighting his potential and fit within the team's culture. Frank praised the defender's speed, game-reading ability, and composure, expressing confidence that he will integrate well with the squad and contribute to the club's ambitions.
