Holographic doctor-patient visits launched at UC Berkeley in September 2024

In September 2024, West Cancer Center & Research Institute, in collaboration with Proto Inc., introduced the first holographic doctor-patient visits at UC Berkeley's Global Healthcare Innovation forum. This innovative approach allows patients in rural areas to access specialized oncologists without the need to travel to urban centers. The technology was initially tested earlier in the year, receiving positive feedback from both patients and doctors, leading to its regular implementation at West's Paris, TN location. Proto's holographic technology, which utilizes AI-powered spatial computing, aims to enhance communication between healthcare providers and patients. Mitch Graves, CEO of West, highlighted the significant need for such services, noting that over half of the 4.7 million people within a 150-mile radius of Germantown live in rural towns. The pandemic has accelerated the acceptance of telemedicine, but the holographic experience offers a more immersive and personal interaction. David Nussbaum, CEO of Proto, expressed his vision of seamless communication between doctors and patients through holograms, emphasizing the importance of meaningful connections in healthcare. The holographic visits have been described by patients as feeling akin to face-to-face consultations, marking a significant advancement in telehealth. West Cancer Center plans to expand its holographic services, with a second location set to open in October. This pioneering initiative not only addresses the healthcare needs of rural communities but also sets a precedent for future innovations in patient care.
