Allotments in Stoke-on-Trent Recognized for Community Efforts

An allotment site in Fenpark, Stoke-on-Trent, has been awarded the title of Best Kept Site in the city, a recognition of the dedication and hard work of its plot holders. The site, which was transformed from a derelict landfill, has thrived over the past 14 years thanks to the efforts of the Fenpark Community Group. Committee secretary Andrew Buckley expressed gratitude for the award, highlighting the community's commitment to the project since the council offered the land in 2010. To meet the challenge of raising £17,000 for fencing and other costs, the community rallied together, successfully securing funds to enhance the allotment area. Buckley noted that the group has focused on becoming self-sufficient by applying for grants and establishing a café and bar to generate additional income. This financial independence has allowed the allotments to flourish and serve as a vital community resource. Residents have praised the health and social benefits of communal gardening. Pauline Beech, a plot holder for a decade, emphasized the positive impact on physical well-being and social interaction. Steve Davis, who brings his grandson to the allotments, described the supportive community atmosphere, where neighbors help one another and enjoy shared meals. The sentiments of the younger generation were echoed by Davis's grandson, who expressed his enjoyment of the allotment experience, stating it is more fun than playing on electronic devices. The award serves as a testament to the community spirit and resilience of the Fenpark allotments.
