Ireland to bring 30 sick Gaza children for medical care

In response to a request from the World Health Organization, the Irish cabinet has approved a plan to bring up to 30 sick children from Gaza to Ireland for medical treatment. This decision comes amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant civilian casualties since the escalation began on October 7, 2023. The Irish government, in collaboration with medical professionals and the Irish Red Cross, has been working on this initiative for several months to address the urgent health needs of those affected by the violence. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly emphasized the importance of this initiative, describing it as a modest yet crucial step in light of the devastating impact of the conflict on civilians, particularly children. The plan includes provisions for each child to travel with a carer, who will be accommodated in homes managed by the Irish Red Cross. Prior to their journey, both patients and carers will undergo health screenings to ensure their well-being. In addition to medical treatment, the Health Service Executive will provide psycho-social assessments for the children and their carers, recognizing the psychological toll of the conflict. Translation services will also be available to facilitate communication and access to necessary services. This initiative reflects Ireland's commitment as an EU member state to respond to humanitarian crises and support vulnerable populations affected by conflict. The government aims to work closely with various stakeholders, including the EU and WHO, to ensure effective medical evacuation and treatment for those in need.
