Harrods announced the appointment of Dame Jasvinder Sanghera as an advocate for survivors following sexual assault allegations against its former owner, Mohamed Al Fayed. The accusations, which surfaced in a September BBC documentary, involve over 20 women who have alleged assault, harassment, and rape over three decades. In her role, Sanghera will assist survivors in navigating Harrods’ compensation process, which is currently engaging over 290 individuals. Justice for Harrods Survivors, an organization representing some accusers, emphasized the need for an independent investigation into the claims. Dame Jasvinder has committed to meeting with as many survivors as possible and has underscored the importance of representation for those impacted. Al Fayed, who passed away in 2023, was accused of exploiting his power to abuse women while he owned various establishments, including Harrods, Fulham FC, and the Ritz Hotel Paris. The documentary and accompanying podcast revealed that Harrods allegedly prioritized covering up these allegations rather than supporting the victims. Since the initial reports, the number of accusers has grown, with more than 100 women reaching out to law firm Leigh Day. Sanghera has expressed her desire to ensure that survivors receive proper support and compensation. Currently, Harrods offers counseling and pays reasonable legal fees to claimants pursuing compensation, aiming for a constructive approach in addressing the victims’ concerns. Currently, more than 421 claims have been documented, indicating a significant history of abuse connected to Al Fayed's ownership of Harrods and other properties, showing the breadth of the situation and the urgent need for survivor representation and justice.
