Yankees Finalize Trade for Jazz Chisholm Jr. from Marlins

The New York Yankees have reached an agreement with the Miami Marlins to acquire outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., according to sources familiar with the deal. Chisholm, who was originally signed as a shortstop from the Bahamas, has showcased his versatility by playing primarily at second base and transitioning to center field last season. Despite battling injuries, including a stress fracture in his lower back that limited his 2022 All-Star season, Chisholm has played 101 games this season, posting a batting average of .249 with 13 home runs. Chisholm's addition comes at a crucial time for the Yankees, who have faced challenges with their current roster. Second baseman Gleyber Torres has shown improvement after a rough start, batting .329 since being benched in late June. However, the team has struggled with other players, including Alex Verdugo and DJ LeMahieu, who have recorded some of the lowest OPS and batting averages in baseball since mid-June. This inconsistency has prompted the Yankees to seek reinforcements. The Yankees plan to utilize Chisholm in both center field and second base, potentially shifting Aaron Judge to left field. While Chisholm has not played third base professionally, his power-hitting ability, particularly to the pull side, is expected to thrive at Yankee Stadium, known for its short right-field porch. Additionally, Chisholm's athleticism could help address the Yankees' struggles in the stolen base department, as they currently rank 29th in the league.
