University of Idaho Unveils Healing Garden Memorial for Murdered Students

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, the University of Idaho unveiled a new garden memorial dedicated to the four students tragically killed on November 13, 2022, as well as other students lost over the years. The event was attended by students, staff, and families, including Stacy Chapin, mother of victim Ethan Chapin, who expressed her gratitude for the effort put into creating the memorial. "It was so well done," she remarked, highlighting the significance of the day. Drew Giacomazzi, a friend and fraternity brother of Ethan, played a key role in the memorial's creation. He shared his emotional response upon seeing the completed garden, describing the university's atmosphere as "dark, cold and distant" following the murders. Giacomazzi emphasized that the Healing Garden aims to foster unity among students, alumni, and the Moscow community, encouraging them to honor the victims through love and laughter. The University of Idaho released a statement on Facebook, noting that the Vandal Healing Garden and Memorial was designed and built by students with support from faculty and alumni. The university described the garden as a symbol of community strength and a space for reflection and remembrance of the students lost. Giacomazzi, who knew all four victims, particularly remembered Ethan as someone who brought joy and warmth to those around him. He expressed hope that the Healing Garden would restore light to the campus, serving as a lasting tribute to the lives of the students it honors.
