Story

The San Francisco Giants are grappling with the performance issues of their right-handed closer, Camilo Doval, who has failed to replicate his All-Star form from 2023. In 46 appearances this season, Doval has recorded a career-worst 4.70 ERA, raising concerns about his effectiveness as the team approaches a critical juncture in the season. Giants manager Bob Melvin acknowledged Doval's struggles, stating, “He’s processing it right now and hopefully he takes it the right way.” Despite Doval's previous success, leading the National League with 39 saves last season, this year has been marked by inconsistency. He has managed 22 saves in 27 opportunities but has also allowed 42 hits and 25 runs, with 23 of those earned. His control has notably declined, as evidenced by his 29 walks this season, surpassing his totals from the previous two years. With the Giants only two games out of a National League wild-card spot, the team cannot afford such inconsistency. Melvin hinted at the possibility of Doval needing a change of scenery to regain his form, suggesting that some of his issues might be better addressed outside the pressure of the big leagues. “He’s an All-Star. We expect him to come back and be an All-Star,” Melvin remarked. In response to Doval's struggles, the Giants have promoted right-hander Landen Roupp to their 40-man roster to help fill the void.
