Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, is spearheading an innovative outdoor art initiative at his recently acquired Powder Mountain ski resort in Eden, Utah. This ambitious project aims to transform the resort's expansive 12,000 acres into a vibrant art destination, reminiscent of his past visit to the Storm King Art Center in New York's Hudson Valley. The initiative began with the installation of two significant artworks: “Relay (Powder Mountain)” by the duo Gerard & Kelly and “We’ll All Go Together” by artist Susan Philipsz. The outdoor artworks are designed to be accessible for both skiing and hiking, inviting the public to engage with art in a unique natural setting. This winter, the program will introduce new commissioned pieces, including works by EJ Hill, known for his innovative indoor roller coaster installations, who will create art on the ski lifts. Additionally, Los Angeles sculptor Davina Semo is set to produce three large-scale bells that will emit different tones when rung, further enhancing the interactive experience for visitors. Hastings' vision for the art program culminates in a grand opening planned for 2026, showcasing a full slate of installations that will enrich the cultural landscape of the ski resort. This initiative not only aims to elevate the aesthetic appeal of Powder Mountain but also to foster a deeper connection between art, nature, and recreation for all who visit.
