On November 4, 2024, Shinobu Hindert, a financial expert and author, conducted a three-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at enhancing financial literacy among young women aged 18 to 25. The workshop, titled "Making Girls Money Savvy," was organized in collaboration with the Mandela Washington Fellowship and focused on essential financial skills. Participants engaged in sessions covering key aspects such as money mindsets, budgeting, goal setting, investing, and negotiating pay. The initiative addressed the specific financial challenges faced by many women in Kenya, where studies show that women earn 30% less than men for similar work. Only 17% of Kenyans are financially healthy, highlighting the need for improved access to financial education and services. Hindert, motivated by her desire to empower women, collaborated with local money coach Juliet Odhiambo to deliver the program. The workshop’s curriculum was carefully curated to equip participants with practical knowledge and tools necessary for managing personal finances. By teaching critical skills in budgeting and investment, the workshop aimed to build a solid foundation for wealth accumulation among young women in Kenya. Participants also learned to advocate for themselves in salary negotiations, an important aspect of their career development. Through this empowering initiative, Hindert and Odhiambo sought to change existing statistics of financial literacy and health among women, ultimately fostering a generation of financially savvy individuals who can navigate financial systems effectively.
