Colorado's Black & Read relocates to bigger space while keeping community ties

Owner Kari Bakken has been associated with Black & Read for over 20 years and, together with her brother, decided that the current space was no longer suitable due to a pressing need for an upgrade and more room. Initially located on Wadsworth Boulevard, the store is moving just down the street into a bigger space, as they require additional square footage to effectively serve their community and inventory. On the day of the move, staff was busy clearing out the vinyl record area, while the other half of the shop remained vibrant and bustling with customers visiting for books and board games. Part of the relocation success was aided by the Arvada Economic Development Association, which comprises a retention committee dedicated to helping local businesses thrive and remain in the city. Bakken was fortunate to have connections within this association, facilitating a smoother transition into a larger property that meets their needs. This organization plays a vital role in retaining successful businesses and ensuring they don't leave the area, which can significantly impact local culture and commerce. It reflects a community effort to support local shops and retain venues that are integral to the city's identity, particularly those that contribute to music, literature, and gaming, areas where Black & Read has become a staple.
