Doug and Kris Tompkins: Pioneering National Parks for Conservation

Douglas and Kristine Tompkins were renowned conservationists who sought to protect wilderness areas through the establishment of national parks. After Doug's tragic death in a kayaking accident in Chile, Kris continued their shared vision, which began with the purchase of a dilapidated farm in Patagonia in 1993. They realized that acquiring private land to donate as national parks was a viable strategy for preserving biodiversity. Their efforts led to the creation of the Pumalin Douglas Tompkins National Park, a significant 762,000-acre area in Chile, and the acquisition of a ranch in Argentina's Ibera wetlands in 1997. In 2017, Kris pledged one million acres to the Chilean government, contingent on the government contributing nine million acres for new national parks. This agreement positioned them as influential philanthropists in the realm of national park development. Their work has also included successful rewilding initiatives, notably the return of 26 jaguars to Argentina, showcasing their commitment to restoring ecosystems. Kris emphasizes the urgency of environmental action, urging individuals of all ages to engage in conservation efforts. She believes that personal connection to nature is crucial for fostering a desire to protect it. To promote this connection, she is leading a tour in February 2025 across Patagonia and Antarctica, aiming to inspire others to appreciate and safeguard these natural wonders.
