Fisher House opens its doors to support veterans and families in Detroit

In a significant development for veterans' support in the United States, a new Fisher House has been dedicated at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan on November 26, 2024. This facility is part of a larger initiative to provide lodging and support for veterans and their families during times of medical need. It is designed to alleviate the financial burden of accommodation while ensuring that families can remain close to their loved ones receiving care. The Detroit Fisher House features 16 wheelchair-accessible suites, along with communal areas including a kitchen, dining room, and family rooms, emphasizing the aim to foster a sense of community among its residents. The construction of the Fisher House is a result of collaboration between Fisher House Foundation and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Fisher House Foundation has been instrumental in establishing homes close to VA medical centers nationwide, and this new facility marks the 13th in the state of Michigan. The dedication ceremony highlighted the contributions of numerous local partners and sponsors, notably Delta Air Lines, which has supported multiple Fisher Houses through its partnership with the foundation. The dedication speech by David A. Coker, the President of Fisher House Foundation, expressed gratitude towards the local community for their commitment and fundraising efforts which made the Detroit Fisher House a reality. The growing network of Fisher Houses nationwide is estimated to have saved military and veteran families about $610 million in lodging and transportation costs since its inception. Additionally, the foundation has plans for further expansions, including new houses in North Chicago, Illinois and Little Rock, Arkansas, which are set to be completed in the near future. Fisher House Michigan, the local fundraising organization, has played a crucial role in supporting the construction and operational costs of these facilities, ensuring that they meet the needs of veterans and their families. As more Fisher Houses open, they continue to serve as vital resources for military families, providing them with a safe and supportive environment during difficult times.
