New York has gained recognition for its pizza, with Una Pizza Napoletana being awarded the top honor in the 2024 50 Top Pizza Awards. This award is significant as it highlights the culinary prowess of New York, a city often compared to Naples, the birthplace of pizza. Anthony Mangieri, the owner of Una Pizza Napoletana, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing his commitment to traditional pizza-making techniques and high-quality ingredients. In addition to Una Pizza Napoletana, three other New York pizzerias made the prestigious list, showcasing the city's vibrant pizza scene. Ribalta ranked 19th, Don Antonio 30th, and L’Industrie Pizzeria also received accolades. Despite New York's strong showing, Italy dominated the overall rankings with 41 entries, including five from Naples, which still holds a significant place in the pizza world. Mangieri's approach to pizza focuses on naturally leavened, wood-fired creations, using premium ingredients such as San Marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella DOP. His dedication to quality is evident in his daily preparation of dough, which is made from a blend of various Italian flours and never refrigerated. This meticulous process appeals to the 'slow food' movement, emphasizing the importance of quality over quantity. Currently, Una Pizza Napoletana is temporarily closed as Mangieri and his team travel in Italy, but they plan to reopen on October 4. The recognition from the 50 Top Pizza Awards not only enhances New York's reputation but also reinforces the passion and dedication of pizza makers like Mangieri, who continue to innovate while honoring traditional methods.
