In a significant development, specialist divers from the organization Lost In Waters Deep have announced the potential discovery of the HMS Hawke, a British warship that sank during World War I. The ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat on October 15, 1914, resulting in the tragic loss of 524 sailors, including many young cadets, with the youngest being just 14 years old. The announcement was made via a Facebook post on Monday, highlighting the emotional weight of the find. To locate the wreck, the divers collaborated with Buchan Divers, utilizing historical evidence such as logbooks from the U-boat and accounts from surviving ships. Their investigation involved analyzing admiralty charts and scanning the seabed in the vicinity of the suspected wreck site. Initial searches revealed no obstructions, but a subsequent scan uncovered a large object that appeared ship-shaped, prompting the team to dive deeper. The divers descended to a depth of 110 meters (361 feet) and discovered the wreck this past Sunday. Due to the challenging conditions, they could only explore for about 20 minutes before planning a return dive for further investigation. While they have yet to find definitive identifying features, such as a ship's bell, the team is confident in their identification, noting that the wreck matches the characteristics of an Edgar-class destroyer, the classification of the HMS Hawke.
