Panama Arrests 15 for Migrant Smuggling

— In a significant crackdown on human trafficking, Panamanian border police announced the arrest of 15 individuals allegedly involved in a smuggling operation facilitating the transit of Chinese migrants through the perilous Darien Gap. This dense jungle area serves as a critical passage for migrants aiming to reach the U.S. border, with Chinese nationals now representing the fourth-largest group attempting the crossing, following Venezuelans. The Darien Gap has seen an unprecedented surge in migrant crossings, with over 500,000 individuals making the journey in 2023 alone. This year, more than 212,000 migrants have already traversed the treacherous terrain, although recent reports indicate a potential decline in numbers. The National Border Service of Panama reported the seizure of 11 vehicles, two dozen cell phones, a rifle, and cash during the operation against the smuggling ring. In response to the escalating migrant crisis, Panama's President José Raúl Mulino, who took office on July 1, has pledged to intensify efforts to manage the influx of migrants from Colombia. As part of these measures, border police have installed approximately three miles of barbed wire to obstruct certain trails and direct migrants to a designated reception area. Additionally, President Mulino has reached an agreement with the U.S. government to fund repatriation flights, aiming to address the growing challenges posed by the massive flow of migrants entering Panama.
