Tarnished Optane 900p SSD raises concerns over storage conditions

A new-old-stock HHHL Optane 900p SSD was recently purchased from eBay, revealing concerning signs of tarnish and corrosion upon unboxing. The SSD came in original factory-sealed packaging, suggesting it had not been used before and was instead stored for a long time. The visible tarnishing was particularly noted on the slot bracket, while also several screws on the card exhibited small rust patches. This degradation indicated that the component had been kept in a humid environment, leading to the corrosion issues observed. The purchaser expressed confidence in the authenticity of the product due to the intact factory seals, as confirmed through several unboxing videos. However, the condition of the SSD parts raised alarms regarding its storage history. The tarnishing of the slot brackets and the rust on the screws suggested a potential long-term exposure to moisture, which can ruin electronic components, hence the concern surrounding their functionality and longevity. To remedy the situation, the owner planned to treat the screws with a rust-removing solution called EvapoRust. The slot brackets, believed to be made of stainless steel, posed a different challenge regarding cleaning and restoration. A suitable metal polishing compound, like Wenol, was considered, but it remained uncertain if it would suffice or if a more specialized cleaning solution was necessary for the tarnished metal.
