In November 2023, the G20 Leaders' Summit took place, marking the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This initiative aims to eradicate hunger and poverty by the year 2030, aligning its goals with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN in 2015. During the summit, key figures discussed the need for urgent action to achieve zero hunger and eliminate poverty, emphasizing that failure in these areas contributes to global crises such as migration and conflicts. Wellington Dias, Brazil's Minister of Social Development and Assistance, highlighted the necessity for wealthier nations to support developing countries through proven effective projects. An essential aspect of this support includes a detailed national plan that must be backed by knowledge and financial resources. The participation of both developed and developing countries is critical, with developed nations expected to offer assistance while developing nations need to take the lead in formulating and implementing their strategies to combat hunger. The Alliance's early commitments include a target of reaching 500 million people with cash transfer programs and expanding nutritious school meals to 150 million children across various countries. During the Doha Forum, a significant event held in Qatar, Dias articulated the importance of collaboration among various global organizations, including the World Bank, UN Development Programme, and the Food and Agriculture Organization. He emphasized that all nations and citizens share responsibility for addressing hunger in today's world, where food production exceeds the global population's needs. The challenge now lies in the practical implementation of the Alliance's vision. Countries like Colombia, Brazil, and Mali are encouraged to share experiences and engage in open dialogues to foster effective strategies against hunger. In the 21st century, combating food waste is also highlighted as a crucial component in creating equitable food distribution. Dias believes that through collective efforts and participation in the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a more prosperous and equitable world can be achieved by the set goal of 2030.
