Story

In a dramatic turn of events late Sunday night, two juvenile suspects were apprehended following an alleged shooting incident involving an Englewood police officer. The confrontation began around 11 p.m. when the officer attempted to pull over a red Jeep Grand Cherokee for a defective vehicle violation near West Dartmouth Avenue and South Shoshone Street. Instead of complying, the driver fled, leading to a pursuit that escalated dangerously. During the chase, the suspects reportedly fired over a dozen shots at the officer using a high-powered weapon from the passenger side window. The gunfire struck the patrol vehicle's front end, engine, and windshield, narrowly missing the officer. Despite the damage, the officer continued the pursuit through an industrial area and into a residential neighborhood, where the suspects ultimately crashed their vehicle. Following the crash, the officer's patrol vehicle was rendered inoperable due to the gunfire damage. Multiple law enforcement agencies joined the search for the suspects, but they initially evaded capture. A subsequent investigation of the abandoned vehicle revealed an AK-47 and numerous shell casings, which helped identify the suspects. One was arrested on Monday, while the other was taken into custody on Tuesday. Both juveniles face serious charges, including criminal attempted first-degree murder of a public official. The 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office will determine further charges. Due to their juvenile status, police have withheld additional details about the suspects.
