Massive Loon Sculpture Unveiled in St. Paul's Midway Neighborhood

A new massive sculpture of a loon has been installed at the intersection of University and Snelling avenues in St. Paul, marking a significant development in the revitalization of the Midway neighborhood. Created by artist Andy Scott, the sculpture, titled 'The Calling,' is intended to serve as a focal point for the United Village project, which aims to enhance the area surrounding Allianz Field, home to the Minnesota United Loons soccer team. The United Village initiative is part of a broader community plan designed to stimulate economic growth and improve the neighborhood's appeal. Mike Hahm, a project advisor, emphasized the importance of this development in fostering prosperity along University and Snelling avenues. Future plans include constructing a new office building and several restaurant pavilions, as well as a hotel on University Avenue, where a McDonald's currently stands. Local leaders are optimistic about the potential for investment in the area, especially in light of recent challenges such as store closures and issues related to drugs and homelessness. Jenne Nelson, executive director of the Hamline Midway Coalition, noted that despite concerns about vacant lots, residents are looking forward to the positive changes that the development will bring. The majority of funding for the United Village project is sourced from private equity, with the city of St. Paul contributing to some public infrastructure costs. This collaboration aims to create a vibrant community space that not only enhances the local economy but also improves the quality of life for residents in the Midway neighborhood.
