More than half of Spaniards demand increased EU defense spending
- 55% of Spaniards support increased defense spending in the EU due to concerns over the war in Ukraine and international issues.
- 76% favor enhanced collaboration among EU member states on defense matters.
- Despite support for defense spending, significant priority is given to employment, health, and education in EU budgeting.
In the fall of 2024, a survey conducted as part of the autumn Eurobarometer revealed that a significant portion of the Spanish populace is concerned about current geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine and the ongoing international situation. The survey indicated that 55% of respondents believe that the European Union should invest more in defense, reflecting a broader apprehension about security across the continent. Notably, 19% expressed strong agreement with increased defense spending, while 36% were somewhat in agreement. Despite this notable support for enhanced defense initiatives, Spaniards ranked security and defense as a low priority for EU budget allocation, placing it eighth compared to other pressing issues such as employment and social services. While 76% of Spaniards favor increased cooperation between member states in defense matters, their preferences for EU budget allocation emphasize more immediate concerns such as social services, health, and education over defense investment. This illustrates a somewhat paradoxical view, where Spaniards express a desire for stronger defense capabilities while simultaneously prioritizing other critical areas for EU funding, a sentiment that may be echoed throughout the union as it grapples with various crises. Furthermore, the survey also pointed out that an overwhelming 84% of Spaniards support the idea of member states purchasing energy jointly to secure better pricing, highlighting a collective approach to economic stability amidst turbulent times.
