OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) — Gillian's Wonderland Pier, a cherished amusement destination on the Ocean City boardwalk, is set to close its doors after nearly 100 years of operation. Owner Jay Gillian announced the unexpected closure via a heartfelt Facebook post, citing the challenges of maintaining the business as the primary reason for the decision. He expressed his gratitude for the support received over the years but acknowledged that the amusement pier is no longer a viable business. In his announcement, Gillian reflected on his deep-rooted connection to the pier, sharing memories of learning to fix and operate rides alongside his brother from the age of 13. He emphasized the importance of family, noting that he had the opportunity to work at the pier with his own children and witness his 13 grandchildren enjoy their first rides. This personal history highlights the pier's significance not only as a business but as a family legacy. The amusement pier, along with 6th Street Pizza and Grill, will remain open through the Fall Block Party weekend, which begins on October 12, allowing patrons to use their remaining tickets. Gillian's announcement leaves the future of the property uncertain, as he will terminate the multi-year lease in the coming months. In closing, Gillian expressed his heartfelt thanks to the visitors and families who have supported the pier over the years, stating that he will cherish a "lifetime of priceless memories" from his time at Wonderland.
