Texas Woman Sentenced to 15 Years for $109 Million Fraud Scheme

A Texas woman, Janet Yamanaka Mello, 57, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for stealing nearly $109 million from a youth development program aimed at supporting children of military families. Mello pleaded guilty to multiple counts of mail fraud and filing false tax returns after creating a fraudulent organization named Child Health and Youth Lifelong Development. U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez presided over the sentencing, highlighting the significant impact of Mello's actions on military families. Prosecutors revealed that Mello misappropriated federal funds intended for the care of military children to finance a lavish lifestyle, which included purchasing multiple mansions, over 80 luxury vehicles, and more than 1,500 pieces of jewelry. IRS Criminal Investigation officials noted that Mello's excessive spending ultimately led to her downfall.
