MORRISVILLE, Pa. (CBS) — The Morrisville Borough Police reported an incident involving six dogs that were abandoned at the Morrisville Dog Park. Witnesses, including local resident Arta Szathmary, noted that the dogs were left without leashes or identification, appearing healthy and friendly. Szathmary expressed her dismay, stating that such actions are heartbreaking as these animals are considered family by many dog owners who frequent the park. According to police, a note was found taped to the park's sign, indicating that the dogs had been rescued from a woman overwhelmed by the number of pets she owned. The note explained that the individual who abandoned the dogs believed the park was a safer option after being unable to keep them in their apartment due to pet restrictions. This situation raises concerns about the growing trend of animal abandonment in the region. Sarah Barnett, executive director of ACCT Philly, highlighted that shelters across the Delaware Valley are experiencing an increase in abandoned animals, often due to financial difficulties faced by pet owners. She urged individuals in crisis to seek help from local shelters or rescue organizations before reaching a breaking point, emphasizing that early intervention can lead to better outcomes for both pets and owners. In a positive turn, Morrisville Police reported that three of the abandoned dogs were adopted on-site, while the remaining three were taken to the Bucks County SPCA in New Hope. Szathmary expressed hope that all the dogs would find loving forever homes where they can thrive.
