Story

Thomas Crooks, the 20-year-old who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, was reportedly practicing at a Pennsylvania gun range just a day before a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) training session took place there. On May 22, Crooks visited the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club, where he practiced shooting alone at the rifle range, as documented in club records obtained by Senator Chuck Grassley’s office. The following day, DHS conducted a police training at the same location, raising questions about the timing of Crooks' visit. The rifle range at Clairton spans 200 yards, providing ample distance for Crooks to hone his skills for the 150-yard shot he would later take at Trump during a rally on July 13. This incident resulted in injuries to the former president and the death of a bystander. While it remains unclear if DHS regularly utilized the range, Crooks was noted to be a frequent visitor, having logged at least 43 visits since joining the club in August 2023. Grassley’s office characterized Crooks' extensive practice as indicative of “intense preparation” for the attack. Throughout his membership, Crooks averaged three to six visits per month, consistently practicing alone and even visiting on holidays. His last visit occurred on July 12, just hours before the shooting. Crooks was ultimately killed by Secret Service snipers during the incident. As investigations continue, no clear motive for his actions has been established, and the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club has refrained from commenting on the matter.
