Indo-Nepal military exercise emphasizes counterterrorism in tough terrains

Nepal is currently hosting the 18th edition of the Indo-Nepal Joint Military Exercise, known as Surya Kiran, which commenced on December 31, 2024, and is set to conclude on January 13, 2025. This military collaboration between the Indian and Nepalese armies highlights their enduring partnership and mutual commitment to military excellence. Approximately 700 personnel from both armies are participating at Saljhandi, Nepal, where they are undergoing rigorous training to enhance operational capabilities. The focus of this year’s exercises is on counterterrorism operations and conducting maneuvers in challenging terrains, vital in today's complex security landscape. The joint exercises include a variety of critical training programs such as urban warfare, jungle survival, ambush tactics, and heliborne operations. Troops are also being trained in combat first aid, close-quarter combat, and room-clearing techniques. Such comprehensive training aims to prepare both forces for modern battlefield scenarios, enhancing their interoperability in joint operations. To further promote collaboration, sessions of team sports and yoga are included, aimed at building mental resilience and camaraderie among the troops participating in the exercise. This year's opening ceremony featured a traditional march conducted by both the Indian and Nepalese contingents, showcasing the cultural ties and cooperation between the countries' military forces. Major General Prem Bahadur Gurung of the Nepal Army emphasized the importance of mutual learning and learning from each other's experiences to enhance the interoperability of both armies. The exercise serves as a platform for increased cooperation and understanding between the Indian Army and the Nepalese Army, contributing to stability and peace in the region. Moreover, the exercise reflects the commitment of both nations to work together in addressing shared security challenges. The Indian Army contingent was given a traditional military reception upon their arrival in Saljhandi on December 29, 2024, which further solidified the strong military ties between India and Nepal. By focusing on cooperation and mutual preparedness, the Indo-Nepal Joint Military Exercise not only enhances the defense capabilities of both countries but also fosters closer relations and understanding between India and Nepal.
