Thierry Despont, a renowned architect and designer, passed away last year at the age of 75 in his Southampton estate, known as Rosewood Farm Estate. The property, which spans 36 acres, was sold for $17.9 million to a New York hedge funder in an all-cash transaction. Initially listed for $23.5 million in 2022, the estate went into contract in May 2023. Despont, originally from France, was celebrated for his elegant design style and significant restoration projects, including the Statue of Liberty and the Carlyle Hotel. He invested $8.55 million over two years to acquire and develop the estate, which features a six-bedroom main residence built from a converted barn. The estate overlooks a 50-acre agricultural reserve, enhancing its scenic appeal. The main house is designed around a cobblestoned courtyard with a fountain, while the grounds include an infinity-edge pool, a pool house converted from another barn, and a four-bedroom guesthouse. The pool house now serves as a lounge, gym, and sauna, showcasing Despont's commitment to creating a luxurious living environment. The landscaped grounds are adorned with mature trees from Africa and a walking path leading to a gazebo, reflecting Despont's artistic vision. The sale marks a significant transition for the estate, now under the ownership of a hedge funder, while preserving the legacy of its late creator.
