Utah State University announced the tragic death of incoming cornerback Andre Seldon Jr., who died Saturday in a cliff-diving accident at Porcupine Reservoir, approximately 20 miles from the campus. The Cache County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to the scene around 2:20 p.m. MT after receiving calls about a man who had jumped from the cliffs and failed to resurface. Search and rescue teams, including divers from the Utah Department of Public Safety, located Seldon’s body later that evening at 9:05 p.m. The sheriff's office indicated that initial investigations suggest the incident was a tragic accident, corroborated by multiple eyewitness accounts. Seldon, 22, was set to join the Utah State football team this fall after transferring from New Mexico State University, where he played all 15 games in the previous season, and had also spent two years at the University of Michigan. Interim Head Coach Nate Dreiling expressed the heartbreak felt within the football program, stating, “Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own.” Dreiling, who previously coached Seldon at New Mexico State, described him as an incredible person and teammate, extending condolences to Seldon’s family, including his parents, Danielle Smith and Andre Seldon Sr. In light of this tragedy, Utah State University is taking steps to provide emotional and mental support for both athletics staff and student-athletes as they navigate this difficult time.
