Design firm Cross Works wins major contract for Tashkent expansion

In 2023, a significant contract was awarded to the Camden-based design firm Cross Works, enabling them to develop a master plan for the extensive 25,000 hectare expansion of Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. This initiative, referred to as New Tashkent, emerged from the need to manage urban growth in an increasingly crowded city, and Cross Works was asked to present their innovative ideas to the government of Uzbekistan. The firm was relatively small, consisting of just 20 members, yet their vision resonated with governmental expectations and aspirations for the city’s future. The project received a warm reception from the Directorate of New Tashkent, the governmental body overseeing the undertaking. In July of the following year, District one of the master plan gained approval, marking an important milestone for Cross Works and validating the confidence the government had in their capabilities. Six months after receiving this approval, significant progress was made as ground was broken on the first construction works of the project. Hakan Agca, the founder and managing director of Cross Works, expressed enthusiasm regarding the project and indicated that its successful initiation could open further opportunities for the firm within Central Asia. The success of this project not only contributes to the architectural landscape of the region but also exemplifies the potential for collaboration between international design firms and local governments in addressing urban development needs.
