Mother suspected of DWI in crash that kills son

ISLIP, N.Y. — A devastating incident on the Southern State Parkway resulted in the death of a 9-year-old boy, allegedly due to his mother driving while impaired. New York State Police reported that the woman, identified as Bedrick, was driving in the wrong direction when she collided with multiple vehicles, leading to extensive damage. Emergency crews quickly responded, diverting traffic from the highway as they worked at the scene. According to police, Bedrick drove approximately five miles the wrong way on Sunrise Highway before entering the Southern State Parkway. A patrol officer from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop her prior to the crash, but she accelerated instead. By the time the officer reached the scene, the collision had already occurred, resulting in significant injuries. First responders managed to extract the boy from the back seat of the SUV and performed CPR while transporting him to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Authorities confirmed that he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Major Stephen J. Udice expressed the trauma experienced by all involved, highlighting the challenges faced by state troopers in such situations. Wrong-way crashes have been a persistent issue on the Southern State Parkway, prompting the installation of extensive signage at all ramps. Police are urging any witnesses to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
