RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (AP) — In a significant safety measure, Southern California Gas Co. announced the shutdown of natural gas service to 135 homes in the Portuguese Bend area of Rancho Palos Verdes on Monday. This decision comes in response to worsening conditions related to a long-standing landslide that has increasingly threatened local infrastructure, including homes and roads. The company cited “significant strain” on its systems, emphasizing the need for immediate action to ensure public safety. The landslide has been moving at alarming rates, with shifts of up to 9 inches (22.8 centimeters) per week reported. In light of the disruption, Southern California Gas Co. expressed regret for the unexpected service interruption and is providing $2,500 to each affected account holder to assist with immediate needs such as laundry and meals. However, the company has not provided an estimate for when service might be restored. The Portuguese Bend area is part of a region known for its ancient landslides, which have been exacerbated by recent weather conditions. Since spring 2023, significant increases in land movement have been observed, attributed to heavy winter rains that have allowed water to penetrate the ground, further destabilizing the earth. Earlier this year, the ongoing earth movement necessitated the dismantling of the historic Wayfarers Chapel to prevent its destruction, with hopes for its reconstruction in a safer location.
