- A police constable from Greater Manchester has been placed under criminal investigation for an alleged assault incident at Manchester Airport.
- The investigation comes after allegations suggesting that the officer was involved in unacceptable behavior.
- This situation raises concerns about the conduct of police officers in public spaces and their accountability.
Newly released footage has captured the chaotic events leading to the alleged assault of three police officers at Manchester Airport. The video, shared by the Manchester Evening News, depicts a scene where an officer is seen kicking and stamping on a man lying face down on the ground. This incident has sparked significant public outcry, resulting in protests in both Rochdale and Manchester city center. In response to the footage circulating on social media, a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer was suspended on Thursday. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) announced that the officer is now under criminal investigation for assault. Police are actively seeking witnesses to three separate incidents that occurred in Terminal 2 of the airport on Tuesday, which included two altercations leading up to the assault on the officers. The altercations resulted in injuries to the officers, including a female constable who suffered a broken nose. Four men were arrested in connection with the incidents but have since been released on bail. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham described the situation as "complicated" and cautioned against rushing to judgment, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. Burnham expressed frustration over the limited release of video evidence, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. He urged the public to allow the IOPC's inquiry into the officer's conduct and the GMP's investigation into other potential offenses to proceed without interference, ensuring a complete understanding of the events.
