Protesters arrested for breaching security at United Center

Chicago police arrested multiple individuals on Monday evening as protests intensified near the United Center, coinciding with the start of the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Footage captured by NBC Chicago/Telemundo Chicago showed demonstrators breaching a security barrier at Park 578, where a city-permitted protest was scheduled to conclude by 6 p.m. The scene escalated as protesters chanted and banged on fences, facing off against a significant police presence in riot gear. According to the DNC Joint Information Center, while protesters managed to breach a section of the outer fencing, they did not penetrate the inner perimeter surrounding the United Center. The statement emphasized the unique security measures in place, including multiple layers of fencing designed to prevent unauthorized access to the convention area. The protests featured a diverse coalition of groups advocating for various left-leaning causes, including climate action, anti-racism, and LGBTQ+ rights. Local police chief Larry Snelling acknowledged the complexities of managing such events, noting the various factors influencing the day. Amid the protests, some individuals volunteered as field medics to ensure the safety of demonstrators. The city had previously agreed to provide a stage, sound system, and portable toilets at Union Park, but not tents, which officials feared could conceal protest activities. As protesters made their way to Park 578, they expressed a desire to negotiate an extension of their protest route. Hatem Abudayyeh from the U.S. Palestinian Community Network stated that discussions were ongoing, emphasizing their commitment to continue negotiations until the last moment.
