- Gerardo Aguilar, who shot Raymond Ojeda in 1991, was found living under a different name.
- Justice was served after decades as the cold case finally came to a close.
Authorities have confirmed that the 1991 murder of 14-year-old Raymond Ojeda in San Jose, California, was committed by Gerardo Aguilar, who was 15 at the time. Ojeda was shot on September 28, 1991, in the Foxdale Loop area, and despite a juvenile warrant being issued for Aguilar's arrest, he vanished before law enforcement could apprehend him. Years later, Aguilar was discovered living under the alias "Gerardo Mulato" in Ohio. Investigators identified him through photographs and DNA analysis, which confirmed his identity. Aguilar had been evading capture while continuing a life of crime, including an arrest in 2004 for assault with a baseball bat in Springfield, Ohio. In 2007, the FBI began investigating Aguilar for drug trafficking. During the investigation, he noticed agents installing a tracking device on his vehicle and, mistakenly believing they were car thieves, he brandished a gun. This confrontation led to an agent fatally shooting Aguilar, who was 33 years old at the time of his death. Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen emphasized the importance of justice, stating, “It’s never too late to identify a killer.” He highlighted that while time may dull memories, the families of victims and his office remain committed to seeking justice for those lost.
