Brussels Concludes Belgian Presidency of EU Council Amid Key Appointments and Achievements

Brussels, 27 June 2024 – The European Union Council wrapped up its session, marking the conclusion of Belgium's six-month presidency. During the final press conference, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo highlighted significant milestones achieved under his leadership, including the initiation of accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova, as well as discussions on utilizing frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict. De Croo emphasized the progress made on critical issues such as the EU's Green Deal and migration challenges, acknowledging the complex geopolitical landscape that Belgium navigated during its presidency. He noted the urgency of addressing these matters, particularly in light of tensions at the EU's borders and ongoing competition in the Middle East. In a bid to temper concerns regarding the upcoming presidency under Viktor Orban of Hungary, De Croo advised that holding the presidency does not equate to dominance over the EU. He stressed the importance of collaborative leadership, stating, “Having this post does not mean you are the boss of the EU. Instead, you must lead the work,” a message directed at Orban. Reflecting on his tenure, De Croo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Prime Minister during this pivotal period, asserting that the EU remains the best place to live, contingent upon collective efforts to enhance prosperity and unity among member states.
