Story

As the August Bank Holiday approaches, travelers are being warned to prepare for significant delays on both road and rail networks. With an estimated two million passengers expected to pass through airports and 19.2 million leisure journeys anticipated on Britain's roads, congestion is likely to peak between 10 AM and 6 PM today. The RAC advises motorists to consider delaying their trips until after 6 PM or waiting until at least 2 PM on Saturday to avoid the lunchtime rush. RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson highlighted that the end of the school holidays is driving increased traffic, particularly for day trips. This weekend is projected to be the busiest August Bank Holiday on the roads in nine years, prompting the RAC to remind drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition to prevent breakdowns. Travelers are encouraged to leave early to avoid traffic jams or be prepared for lengthy queues. At the Port of Dover, around 20,000 cars are expected to cross the Channel this weekend. CEO Doug Bannister emphasized the importance of adhering to the two-hour arrival window for travelers, similar to airport protocols. He also noted ongoing preparations for the EU’s new Entry/Exit system, which may lead to longer wait times but assures travelers they will be accommodated on the next available sailing. National Highways' Dale Hipkiss pointed out that popular destinations such as seaside resorts, airports, and theme parks will see increased traffic, particularly as people head to Europe for last-minute vacations. He urged drivers to perform basic vehicle checks and maintenance to ensure safety and minimize delays during their journeys.
