On September 20, 2024, Canadore College officially opened its new multi-use recreation facility, known as the Dome, located at the Commerce Court Campus in North Bay, Ontario. This facility spans 85,000 square feet and is designed to support a variety of year-round activities, including soccer, golf, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, and dry land training. The Dome aims to enhance academic programs, recreational services, and sports delivery for students while also serving as a community recreation hub. The development of the Dome is a significant investment by Canadore College, reflecting its commitment to meeting the growing needs of its students and the broader community. George Burton, the College's President and CEO, emphasized that the facility will not only benefit students but also contribute to the regional sports ecosystem. The Dome includes a 6,200 square foot clubhouse with change rooms, reception areas, and instructional spaces, addressing the long-standing demand for covered sports facilities in the area. The opening of the Dome is expected to create additional opportunities for both the College and the surrounding region, as it can also function as the largest event space in the area, attracting sports and tourism events. Jolene Carter, President of the Canadore Student Council, expressed gratitude for the project, highlighting its potential to enhance physical health and well-being for students and the community. Canadore College continues to play a vital role in the local economy, contributing $402.5 million to the Nipissing Parry Sound service area. With approximately 1,000 graduates each year, the College relies on innovative funding strategies to support its initiatives, including this new facility.
