Toyota's urban cruiser SUV sparks controversy with delayed UK debut in 2025

In late 2025, Toyota plans to introduce the Urban Cruiser, a compact electric SUV designed for the European market. This vehicle, developed in collaboration with Suzuki, will be officially unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show next month. The Urban Cruiser's dimensions are slightly larger than the Yaris Cross and focus on compact design, making it appealing for urban consumers. With competing models from other brands like Ford and Hyundai, Toyota aims to strengthen its EV presence in Europe. The Urban Cruiser showcases specifications similar to the recently announced Suzuki E Vitara, featuring a choice between a 49 kWh front-wheel-drive (FWD) version and a 61 kWh all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant. The AWD model will deliver up to 135 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque, which is sufficient for varied driving conditions. Although precise range figures are yet to be revealed, it is expected to provide around 248 miles on a single charge, concurrent with what competitors are offering. Toyota's gradual move into fully electric vehicles has previously been overshadowed by its focus on hybrid technology and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. However, the company is pivoting towards establishing a more robust EV lineup, targeting 15 electric models by 2026 as part of its ambitious strategy. The Urban Cruiser exemplifies this shift, reflecting Toyota's efforts to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving automotive industry that increasingly favors electric solutions. To further support this initiative, Toyota has invested nearly $1 billion in a new paint facility in Kentucky, indicating its commitment to expanding EV manufacturing capabilities. Once launched, the Urban Cruiser is anticipated to compete directly against models from other manufacturers while showcasing features like downhill assist and other driving modes, aligning it with modern consumer expectations for safety and performance in electric vehicles.
